Yin Yoga – The Quiet Practice

Yoga has so much to offer in the way of practice – poses for strength and poses for flexibility; sequences that stimulate and flows that calm; breathing techniques that heat you up and those that cool you down; focusing skills that help you concentrate and meditations that allow you to expand…In the span of a week, one can tailor their practice to include all these areas so that by the end of seven days you are well-balanced to start the next week. One great way to finish off your week is with the practice of Yin Yoga (you can practice yin with me on Thursdays and Sundays at 9:15 am!).

Sometimes referred to as “the quiet practice”, Yin Yoga has become a wonderful complement to more active styles of yoga. In the context of yin and yang (contrasting dualities of existence), yin is slow/passive/inward/cool while yang is moving/active/outward/warm. Yin Yoga is done with little movement and no warm-up, and one is guided to passively release into a pose for an extended period of time, bringing their mental focus inward. This is not a restorative practice – it can be challenging and even stimulating to remain still and work with the sensations that come and go in the body. Our goal on a physical level is to gently bring a traction-like stimulation to the joints and deeper connective tissues in order to bring about a release of rigidity, promote better energy flow, and therefore improve mobility. Sometimes the pose will feel like a squeeze or squish as we lean or fold into it; other times the pose will feel like a pull as tissues are gently coaxed apart. Body sensations can become intense and then they subside…and we learn not to over-react or under-react. The goals on energetic and mental levels are to breathe, to stay connected, to stay present. We breathe through the experience with mindful awareness and of course, with wisdom – knowing what you know and feel of your body (your health situation, your injuries, your current mind-state, etc.), you are asked to make skillful decisions in guiding your body to its appropriate edge, not pushing beyond that edge. And you always have the choice not to go there at all if this practice isn’t right for you at the time (recent injury, acute health condition, high anxiety, etc.). So there is a huge component in this practice of mindfulness – being very present at all times as a discerning participant and keen observer.

My experience of Yin Yoga has run the gamut from profound release to frustration (as one of my dear teachers calls it, “from blissed to pissed”…). It reminds me of the ebbs and flows of life…Some days I let go completely and allow the practice to unfold, gently releasing my muscular gripping and feeling into the pull of the tissues. When I’m focused and present, I can direct my awareness to my breath and actually feel a deeper energetic release that sometimes defies explanation. Not just a physical release in the body, but mentally and emotionally letting go. Other times, I am impatient and restless as I resist the “pose I don’t like”. My hips ache, my mind wanders, I need to hurry up to get to my emails, and I can’t wait until it’s over as I fidget and silently complain. On those days, my practice is self-compassion and acceptance…

All yoga is about finding harmony within oneself – balance in body, breath, emotions, mind..and this balance allows us to connect on a deeper level to one another, and to Spirit. Yin Yoga, as a complement to more active, yang-style practices, offers one more way we can return to harmony.

WELCOME 2016

FEEL…GROW…TRANSFORM…EXPAND…these are my intentions for the new year. Whether I’m in the wintry snow-laden landscape of my own backyard or on a sun-drenched tropical island, wherever I go…there I am…with another opportunity to be more present in my body, heart, and mind.

Before my yoga classes begin for the 2016 winter session (see About Anne’s Yoga Classes) I’m spending some time beyond my backyard to appreciate the colours of life in Jamaica. Sure it’s a tropical holiday by the ocean…but it’s not a crazy resort getaway. In the comfort of a private villa, we have everything we need and more, including an attentive staff who are becoming more like friends. A small intimate group of nine we are…who alternate between moments of boisterous hilarity at the table playing cards and quiet solitary contemplation by the water. Right down to the three little squid who seemed to play tag with us while we were snorkelling, there is an energetic flow of giving and receiving. Here in this space, in this moment, in the company of new and old friends, I feel expansive…Let the new year begin!

Holiday Wishes

No snow here this year, just rain…but the holiday season is in full force regardless of the weather! May this season bring more currents of joy, peace, and love in this world, starting with YOU, right here, right now. To cultivate these energies, consider starting each day with an intention.

Before you even get out of bed in the morning, take a few deep breaths and welcome your day with a resolve or vow (in Sanskrit this is called a Sankalpa). This is more than just an affirmation or a goal to achieve; it is a statement of BEING. At the very core, how do you want to BE? Loving? Patient? Compassionate? Happy? Consider the qualities needed to express these states of being, then vow to embody those positive qualities in all your thoughts, words, and actions. It’s not always easy and you will need to remind yourself over and over, especially when you catch yourself straying away from these states in the heat of anger, frustration, or judgement…(and notice just how often that happens!) but once you set your intention it’s like planting a seed. Keep watering it, and it will grow.

In the therapeutic practice of Reiki (a traditional Japanese holistic therapy that directs energy through the hands), we practitioners set intentions so that we can be clear and effective channels of energy, not only for ourselves but for our clients. We call these intentions the “Reiki  ideals” and they can be wonderful guidelines for a Sankalpa.

JUST FOR TODAY, I WILL NOT BE ANGRY.

JUST FOR TODAY, I WILL NOT WORRY.

JUST FOR TODAY, I WILL BE GRATEFUL.

JUST FOR TODAY, I WILL WORK ON MY SELF.

JUST FOR TODAY, I WILL BE KIND TO OTHERS.

Whether it’s a daily intention, a New Year’s resolution, or an in-the-moment choice to ACT mindfully, may we all endeavour to embody the ways of BEING that promote peace!

Wishing you and your loved ones all the best this holiday season. Namaste…

IMG_20151009_135253

GREETINGS OF THE SEASON!

With December arriving and holiday plans in the making, it’s hard not to get caught up in the busyness of the season. This is a time when we have many opportunities to practice patience, unattachment, moderation, gratitude, and balance…but sometimes we need a little help. That’s where your yoga practice comes in – it can help ground you, calm your mind, restore your energy, and gives you tools to navigate the challenges of the season. Make it a priority for yourself, then all others around you will benefit!

Info about my classes this month:

  1. Manotick classes at Denise Smith Dance Studio continue until Dec. 17. Last Meditation and Movement class for this year is this Sunday Dec. 13 – 2:00 – 3:00 pm (great way to treat yourself to some downtime in this busy season!). Effective immediately, we will be using the rear entrance (walk around the parking lot to the back and look for my sign – Yoga In My Backyard). Classes for the 2016 winter session resume Tue. Jan. 12 and Thu. Jan. 14. Don’t forget the new Sunday morning YIN classes starting Jan. 17!
  2. I am pleased to announce a special 75-minute holiday class on Tue. Dec. 29 from 9:30 – 10:45 am at Denise Smith Dance Studio. This is a DONATION CLASS – all proceeds will go to children/youth in need both in our backyard and beyond…To register, send an email to Anne to confirm your attendance (class size is limited to 30). ***UPDATE: CLASS IS POSTPONED DUE TO WINTER STORM***
  3. Last chance to catch me at Empower Me Yoga this month for Hatha Yoga – Sundays in December from 9:30 – 10:45 am.

In this holiday season, and always, let your yoga practice reveal the light within you so you may shine brightly for your self, for your loved ones, and for this world.

“Right here, right now, you are whole and complete. Let yogasana bring you light and peace. Hari Om.” – Yogrishi Vishvketu, “Yogasana”

Namaste and Happy Holidays!

Minding My Own Business

Lately I’ve been pre-occupied with spreadsheets, account balancing, advertising, networking, and ongoing trips to the print shop. I knew that the biz side of this little yoga venture of mine would take up more of my time and I was psyching myself up to deal with a huge pile of administrative projects. But the interesting thing is that I’m not stressed, I’m not overloaded, I’m not disorganized. In fact, I feel content and happy and on-the-ball. I feel inspired, creative, and focused on what needs to be done. In tending to my little business with mindfulness and present-moment attention, my work is getting done. And what is at the core of it all is the wisdom of YOGA.

More and more I’m feeling that the seeds I’ve been planting and nurturing in myself all these years through yoga have sprouted and are growing. There is a depth of “knowingness” about myself that I am feeling more often, and this understanding is guiding me in what I think is the right direction. Sure, there are still weeds that sprout up, too, and it’s a never-ending job taking care of those ones that have deep roots. But an inner voice keeps reminding me of the key principles of the yoga tradition as outlined in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras – AHIMSA (non-harming), SATYA (truthfulness), ASTEYA (non-stealing), BRAHMACHARYA (continence), APARIGRAHA (non-grasping), SAUCHA (purity), SANTOSHA (contentment), TAPAS (discipline), SVADHYAYA (self-study), ISHVARA PRANIDHANA (surrender to God). As much as I’m trying to apply this to my day-to-day life, I am also trying to apply it to my business.

I can only imagine how ancient yogis would look in dismay upon our yoga business today…We could say, “Ya but that was a totally different time and culture” and argue that today’s yoga has evolved to meet the needs of our technologically-driven stressed out “more-is-better” society. While I believe yoga is needed so desperately these days, it has to be something other than just a once-a-week attendance in a class, and something deeper than a yoga pose selfie. It has to be a day-to-day LIVING in awareness and a commitment to BEING all those things that we strive so hard to be – kind, compassionate, loving, patient, forgiving, trusting…Can we bring these qualities to our work life? Can we show up daily and do our jobs with guidance and trust from within? Can we discover our DHARMA – our purpose in life – without being so driven by the mistaken idea that we MUST have or CAN have IT (whatever IT is…) all?

I’m reminded of the wise advice of Narvada Puri Mataji, a beautiful life-long yogi I met in India at the Shri Santosh Puri Ashram who has sinced passed away. When asked what she thought about living a yogic life in today’s world, she simply said “Just live it”. Again we could say, “Ya but it’s not so easy…” and the truth is, it is damn hard at times. But she also said that in the West, people are the VICTIMS of their own suffering whereas the spiritual are MASTERS of suffering. So to be a master in your craft, your job, your life, you have to take the ups and the downs, let go of the clinging to MORE and be present with what IS.

Back to work now…I have a papers to file, a desk to organize, and emails to answer. But as I mind my own business with skill, care, and wisdom (and take a break now and then to breathe…), I know that this work day, like any day, is simply another yoga practice.

“Do your daily duty, and let the rest go. Poke away systematically at your little calling. Tend the garden a little bit every day. You do not have to exhaust yourself with great acts. Show up for your duty, for your dharma. Then let it go.” – Stephen Cope, “The Great Work of Your Life”

Love…actually…

Over 30-plus years ago, something happened to me that changed the trajectory of my life forever. It was unexpected, in-the-moment, and kind of goofy. I had no idea to what heights it would take me, or to what lows it would help me endure. I could not have imagined how it would guide me to today. That something was (and still is) LOVE…actually…

Today is my (our) 28th wedding anniversary. My gift to hubby is this public declaration of my love…and an opportunity to contemplate what it really means. Has today’s definition of love changed or is there a timeless essence that exists no matter what era? Romantic love, familial love, pet love, tough love, friend love, love you end a text message with (LY4E – love you forever), self-love, spiritual love…It goes by many forms but I looked up the definition in my old 1997 Merriam-Webster dictionary and it seems that the basis of ALL love is a deep connection between 2 or more parties (whether those parties are between me/myself/I, my spouse, God, or all of humanity). This is the definition:

LOVE (noun) – “strong affection; warm attachment; attraction based on sexual desire; a beloved person; unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for others; a score of zero in tennis”.

Ha, love can even be found at Wimbledon…

One of the more traditional passages used to explain LOVE is from the Bible – 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 and was one we used in our wedding vows:

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails…”

And yet others, from the online Urban Dictionary:

The most spectacular, indescribable, deep euphoric feeling for someone…unconditional affection with no limits or conditions…an overused word…either a horrible disease or a blessing…is known to be highly contagious and can be deadly…

Ah yes, the downside of love – when it’s not reciprocated, or when it’s betrayed, or when it is lost. When there is an interrupt in the giving-receiving flow. When one’s definition changes because of past negative experiences that shadow the real essence of love. Such a complicated four-letter word…

An interesting perspective on LOVE comes from the more scientific view of “positivity resonance” – being in HARMONY with those around you by establishing a positive connection that is mirrored back to you. According to research, when we are connected with others our brain and heart rhythms synchronize. This leads to improved physiological functioning and a higher sense of well-being (see https://www.theconnection.tv/the-power-of-love-how-3-micro-moments-change-everything/ for how to practice better connection).

I’m not an expert, but the very fact that I’m writing this today makes me understand that right here, right now, I am IN love and it is with WITHIN me. I feel it coming back to me…everyday…so I know hubby feels the same. I see it in his actions, hear it in his words, feel it when he wraps his arms around me, and know it in my heart. Even on those days when we’re feeling off or when we’re travelling apart or after we’ve had a disagreement or when we forget…it’s still there. And it is the biggest gift we can pass on by example to our sons. Maybe the oldest definition from the Bible still holds true. Love never fails…

Happy Anniversary, Honey. LY4E..as goofy as you are…
